Town plans memorial for Danny Quesada
A young man whose gallant fight to survive cystic fibrosis captured the hearts of Miami Lakers will be remembered with a tribute at Graham Park.
Daniel “Danny” Quesada, 18, died Sept. 25 while awaiting a lung transplant.
To help defray the costs of Quesada’s medical bills, the annual Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Great Strides 5K run/walk had been held in Graham park.
The town will rename Meadow Walk -- which borders the park between Bull Run Road and Miami Lakeway North -- for Quesada.
A street sign will read “Running with Danny Lane,” an idea proposed by Vice Mayor Nelson Rodriguez.
An oak tree will also be planted.
“Running with Danny” was the motto for another fundraiser sponsored by the Children’s Organ Transplant Association, a non-profit group which helps children and young adults raise money for organ transplants.
At the Oct. 8 council meeting, Rodriguez said Quesada demonstrated strength and courage during his lifelong battle with the disease that affected his breathing and digestion.
Despite his illness, Quesada competed in cross country meets while he was a student at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School in town and Christopher Columbus High School in Miami.
“He’s an inspiration to many people,” Rodriguez said.
Councilman Luis Collazo said cystic fibrosis devastated his family.
“My family lost my brother to the same disease,” said Collazo.
Collazo co-sponsored the memorial for Quesada.
“We must continue to create awareness to a disease we have no control over,” he said.
Quesada’s parents, Mike and Maria Quesada, were present when Rodriguez proposed the project.
“Once again, Miami Lakes showed the support it has been showing us from day one,” Mike Quesada said. “We are honored.”
He said the Great Strides 5K run/walk must continue, to raise awareness about cystic fibrosis and to help find a cure for it.
“Together, we can fight this disease,” Quesada said.
The town will announce the unveiling of the sign on a future date.
