American Legion Post 144 gave awards to students in local schools during graduation season. The recognition is the highest honor the Legion presents to American youth. Recipients display six qualities, American Legion Post 144 Commander Gary Cardenas said in an email. Those qualities are:
Courage: to do the right thing when peers may not.
Honor: to be honest – and have respect for parents and teachers.
Leadership: to stand out among your peers.
Patriotism: to have respect for the freedoms we enjoy.
Scholarship: to do your best in school and look for opportunities to learn.
Service: to do something for others through clubs or just helping someone on your own.
Kids in elementary grades through college, to Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and cadets in the Reserve Officer Training Corps are eligible to receive the recognition.
