The United States Naval Academy (USNA) is a strong proponent of boosting comprehension and interest in the academic subjects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, collectively known as STEM, with the hopes that students will be more inclined to attend college and pursue a STEM major.
USNA recently extended the opportunity to four high schools in Miami-Dade County to select high-achieving students to attend the STEM program in Annapolis, Maryland in late January.
Students nominated from American Senior High School included Gloria Chyr, Lianne Dela Cruz, Diane San Martin, Michael Rizo, Nathan Farley and Kassandra Cuero. Through private donations, USNA funded all expenses for airfare, lodging and meals.
The high schoolers worked in world-class lab facilities in what has been ranked by the U.S. News and World Report as one of the Top 5 Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs in the country.
