Bob Graham Education Center's seventh grade Civic Engagement Academy students, led by teacher Ingy Cruz, were honored by having Miami Lakes Councilmember Tony Lama visit their class. The Law Society students invited Lama to discuss their Project Citizen.
Lama gave the students insight on local government and how town issues are addressed. The students presented their Project Citizen public policy concern regarding children in athletic programs dying of undetected heart disease.
Students in the class were friends and dance mates with Breanna Vergara, an 11-year-old Miami Lakes Middle Schooler who died suddenly from Wolff-Parkinson White Syndrome. Her story inspired them to choose this issue as their topic.
Lama was informative and helpful in giving advice and suggestions for their project. The students were thrilled to receive his input and knowledge and are motivated to continue their work on this issue that hits so close to home.
