Shown in the photo at right are the extended family of the late Roberto Alonso, the first vice mayor in Miami Lakes, on stage at the Sixth Annual Miami Lakes Cars for a Cure charity show on April 3. They are from left: Mauricio Banderas, Jesus Mendoza, Christine Banderas, Jessica Mendoza, Kaylee Mendoza, Carolina Banderas, Joshua Mendoza, Luciano Banderas, Idania Alonso, Robbie Alonso, Oliver Alonso, Alexandra Alonso and Roberto Alonso Jr.

The elder Alonso’s son Roberto Alonso Jr. said more than $30,000 was raised and will fund pediatric cancer research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami.

“The crowd was really amazing and showed how Miami Lakes and its neighboring communities really supported our cause,” Alonso said.

The elder Alonso loved cars. He died at age 64 in 2013 from neuroendocrine carcinoma. The family credits the treatment he received at the university with extending his life.

In addition to performances by musicians Ricky Valido and Mantrap, there was a beer garden and pig roast for visitors to enjoy. Photos courtesy of Miami Lakes Cars for a Cure.
