Miami-Dade Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. generously donated $15,000 to the Town of Miami Lakes to ensure the continuation of senior programming at Mary Collins Community Center.
The donation will allow classes to continue for approximately six months beginning this month.
Funding for the programs had been cut during the State legislative session. The town’s Elderly Affairs Committee proposed moving funds from its budget to allow for classes to continue through September.
In the past, Miami-Dade County Public Schools applied for a grant from the State and the monies were distributed to various schools to provide senior programming throughout the county. Miami Lakes classes were previously provided through monies given to Hialeah Adult Education Center. A long term funding alternative is still being pursued by all governmental agencies.
