Aug. 16 Miami Lakes will open the resurfaced pickleball courts at Optimist Park with a ribbon cutting and a free instructional clinic taught by MGT Academy. Sponsored by Baptist Health. Miami Lakes Optimist Park, 6411 NW 62nd St. That Saturday, courts will be open for play after the event, which runs from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and is free. Regular daily hours are 7:30 a.m. - 9:45 p.m.

Aug. 16 Coffee at Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station 64 Free and fun kid activity alert! Meet firefighters at this event sponsored by the Miami Lakes Public Safety Committee and Gameday Men’s Health. Greeting the public will be Sparky the MDFR Mascot; emotional support dogs; drowning prevention experts and the Antivenom Team. Tour the town’s newest fire station, see the trucks and equipment. Firefighters will provide hot dogs. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station 64, 15325 NW 77th Court. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sept. 4 Book Talk with Christina Diaz Gonzalez The Cultural Affairs Committee will host attorney and award-winning author of “The Red Umbrella,” “A Thunderous Whisper;” “Moving Target,” “Concealed;” “Invisible: A Graphic Novel,” and “The Bluest Sky.” Gonzalez will appear in person at Miami Lakes Town Hall to discuss her novels. “The Red Umbrella,” which describes the journey of a 14-year-old girl who escapes Cuba and arrives in Nebraska, will be of interest to those who fled aboard the Pedro Pan flights.  6601 Main St., 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Free.
