Council recognizes community accomplishments

Miami Lakes community members were recognized at the June Town Council meeting for their accomplishments and community support.

Marge Wessel was named an honorary member of the Town’s Youth Activities Task Force after years of service and dedication. A founding member of the Sports Society, she has been integral in honoring local girls and women who promote opportunities for females in sports. She has been an educator and assistant principal for several Miami-Dade County schools including Hialeah Miami Lakes High School.

Miami Lakes Middle School Band led by Ana Pena is the most decorated middle school band in the local area earning 65 Superior Ratings and six Excellent Ratings at the Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Bob Graham Education Center’s 7th and 8th-grade Civic Engagement Academies were again recognized for their winning 3rd place at the National We The People competition as well as winning 1st and 2nd place honors on their Project Citizen project.

Jessica Comellas was commended for her passion and energy in raising funds and creating awareness for Alzheimer’s. Her “piano-thon” events have raised over $10,000 in the past two years for the Alzheimer’s Association.

A proclamation was presented in memory of Beverly Lam in honor of a Scouting hero and community leader. Lam selflessly gave her all to Scouting for countless years. She embodied a Scout’s responsibility to “help other people at all times,” to live the Scout Oath and Law, and to leave the world better than she found it.
