Crafter puts aside glitter to make masks

Sofia Resino’s business – handmade hairbands and bows, decorative accessories for the home and jewelry – are sold on her website and
Instagram page called Spray on the Glitter.
But as the coronavirus outbreak grew, Resino, 25, put aside her pixie dust for a more serious project: making face masks.
“Being able to make something so important for those who need it during this difficult time makes me feel proud,” Resino said.
She grew up in Miami Lakes and lives in Miramar.
When Resino felt compelled to make the masks that she gives away for free, she had to lay down her glue gun and get out her sewing machine, which she hadn’t touched for a while.
But she watched an online tutorial and soon a spool of thread was spinning on top of her machine.
Resino uses cotton to make the masks and adds a flannel liner and elastic for wearers to secure them in place behind their ears.
The masks come in cheerful fabrics: colorful florals, polka dots and Disney characters.
Though they’re not made of N-95 mask material -- which is the preferred mask health care workers would like to have that is in short supply these days -- Resino said some people wear her masks as an added layer of protection, on top of their medical grade equipment.
She said she has shipped her masks to health care workers in Connecticut, California and
Pennsylvania.
Rachel Gonzalez, a pediatric physical therapist from Miami Lakes, said she ordered six of Resino’s masks to wear at work.
“I can’t thank Sofia enough for her thoughtfulness,” Gonzalez said. “I work with many sick and immunocompromised children, and my center ran out of masks.”
Resino said she plans to make masks while her supplies last.
“I can use my love for crafting to help people,” Resino said.
