Free Oral Cancer screenings planned for April 22 to 30

In honor of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Miami Lakes Cosmetic Dentistry will offer free oral cancer screenings from April 22 to 30 at 6600 Cow Pen Road, Suite 240.
Oral cancer is not a rare disease as more than 49,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer every year in the U.S. It kills one person every hour of the day and approximately 132 new individuals will be diagnosed with it every day.
Oral cancer can often be found early in its development through a simple, painless and quick screening and every adult should be screened. With early detection survival rates are high and the side effects from treatment are at their lowest.
Oral cancer can develop in one of two distinct pathways. One is through the use of tobacco and alcohol, a long-term historic problem and cause.
The other is through exposure to the HPV16 virus (human papilloma virus version 16) which is now the leading cause of oropharyngeal cancers in the U.S., and the same one responsible for the vast majority of cervical cancers in women.
