The Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School Debate Team continued their winning streak and took home the trophy from The Fairchild Environment Debate.
Held at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden on Feb. 18, it required students to argue ideas in social studies and science categories, such as allowing developers to cut down trees without permits, among other topics.
Speech and Debate Sponsor Michelle Simon said Lucia Bring and Isaura Valdes won the final round, bringing the trophy home.
“I’d like to acknowledge that this is not the debate team’s win, but all of HML’s,” Simon said in an email.
Competitors used skills learned in their courses, including Environmental Studies, AP Biology, AP Research and from the Law Studies Program, passing legislation and advocacy, according to Simon.
The team has competed at Fairchild for the past four years and this is the first year they placed 1st and 2nd.
“To say that I’m proud is an understatement,” Simon wrote.
