Hialeah Miami Lakes got its second win of the season, defeating Westland Hialeah, 35-21, at Milander Park last week. The Trojans registered 167 yards on the ground and scored four rushing touchdowns. Westland Hialeah quarterback Romel Guerrier rushed for 200 yards on 17 carries and threw for two touchdowns in a losing effort.
American High defeated Mourning High, 37-0, to keep its district championship hopes alive and will face Mater Academy, who lost to Miami Springs, 35-34 in overtime, on Friday. If Mater wins, it will face a three-way tie-breaker playoff between American, Miami Springs and Mater Academy.
In the American-Mourning game, Patriots’ running back Arkeem Granger ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Ed Crouch threw for two touchdown passes and ran for a score. In the Miami Springs-Mater Academy district showdown, Golden Hawks running back Malik Thomas scored on 6-yard run and David Torres kicked the extra point in the game-winning series. Pace High lost to Jackson, 38-32, in a close game that came down to wire.
Knotted at 32-32 at the two-minute warning, Jackson’s quarterback Quinton Flowers floated a deep pass to receiver Jovon Durant for a 42-yard touchdown to give Jackson the lead. The Spartans had a chance to tie the game at Jackson’s 18-yard line with seconds left, but the ball was intercepted.
HML volleyball team secures state tourney spot:
Hialeah Miami Lakes High School’s Lady Trojans Volleyball Team, led by coach Alex Plaza, defeated North Miami Beach Senior High in the semi-finals of the District Championship Tournament on Tuesday, October 22.
HML won in three straight sets – 25-18, 25-12, 25-21. With the win, the Lady Trojans locked in their spot for the FHSAA State Volleyball Tournament, which began the last week of October.
