Religious Tuesday, March 31, 2015

Charles Sonny Metzcus, a longtime Miami Lakes resident who was a teacher and athletic trainer at Hialeah Miami Lakes High School for many years, died on March 14 following an illness.

He was 82.

Metzcus’ daughter, Monique Quenneville, said her father knew he was ill before he died.

Metzcus and his wife of 47 years, Mary Rose, have been Miami Lakes residents since 1974.

As a teacher and athletic trainer, his hard work and dedication affected the lives of many people, especially at HML.

He retired in 1995 but continued to substitute teach at HML and volunteered for the school’s athletic events.

“I will always remember with pride working with so many great student athletes and coaches during my years at HML,” he said during his retirement.

Metzcus was honored with the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Lifetime Achievement Social Service Award in 2013 for outstanding service in the state of Florida.

He was a proud veteran having served in the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of Captain.

Metzcus is survived by his wife, daughters Monique Quenneville, Michelle Reavis, Miriam Ochoa, grandson Austin, his brothers Michael Greg and his sister, Gail Metzcus.

His family hosted a celebration of his life on March 17 at Memorial Plan Funeral Home in Hialeah, and a mass the following day at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Miami Lakes.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations in his memory go to the Trojan Booster Club Inc., at HML’s athletic department.
