June programs set at Miami Lakes Branch Library

Miami Lakes Branch Library has the following programs available for the public during June:

For Children and families:

Dry Ice Ice Baby – Summer Reading Kickoff Event. Children will learn about states of matter, density, mass and chemistry with this cool show. Program made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board and the Miami Dolphins Foundation. Open for the family at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 7.

Summer Reading Program – From June 7 to July 19, a time to get electrified with a good book, discover sizzling finds, or start  a reading chain reaction at the library. Sign up for the Summer Reading Program where participants can win great prizes.

When School is Out, Lunch is In @ the Library - Kids, 18 and under, can enjoy a free lunch on a first come, first served basis, Mondays through Thursdays, 1 to 2 p.m., from June 9 to August 15.

Fizz, Boom Bang! Family Storytime – Enjoy stories and activities that will spark scientific curiosity. Registration required, for ages 4-9, at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, June 12, 19 and 27. Contact the branch at 305-822-6520 for more information.

The Wildlife Show – Snakes, gators and birds. Get to know the critters that call South Florida their home. Program made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 14.

Oooga the Cavewoman – Travel back in time with Oooga the Cavewoman, a primitive and silly cave dweller caught in H.G. Wells Time Machine. Oooga performs a primitive dance, shares dinosaur tales and cave stories. Program made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 21.

Paper Weaving and Inspirational Writing Workshop (in conjunction with Bass Museum’s Exhibition “Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui.” Miami Lakes Branch Ghanian artist, El Anatsui, creates art from recycled materials into a new type of media that lies between sculpture and painting. Participants will learn how one unused material can  be combined with others to make new materials. Limited to 30 participants, ages 6 years and up. Register at the branch. Event is at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 28.

For Teens:

Tween Book Club – This is a tween book club for ages 8-12. Members meet once a month to discuss the chosen book of the month. Registration required. Meets at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 28.

Motion Commotion with Wacky Wild - A show that requires participants to jump and move to understand the difficult concepts surrounding physical science in an interactive demonstration and hands-on activities for a strong grasp on force, motion, gravity and energy. For ages 12-19. Register at the branch. Program made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24.

Teen Club: Spark A Reaction! – Teens participate in the Summer Reading Program followed by games and more at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10.

Teen Club: Games and More - Teens meet to play video games, watch anime, draw or discuss books. For ages 12-19 years at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3.

For Adults:

Book Discussion Group – Contact the branch for this month’s title. Meets at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17.

Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr.’s Mobile Office Community Outreach – Provides an opportunity for the community to speak with the Commissioner and/or his representative at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 9.

Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart Community Outreach – A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will visit the library to discuss federal issues or any problem a constituent may have with a federal agency. Meets at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25.
