June Programs set for M. Lakes Branch Library

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs are available for the public during June:

Summer Reading Program: This year’s program runs from June 11 to August 6. No matter a reader’s age, they are eligible for a chance to win a fabulous prize. All they need to do is read or listen to a book, attend a library program or download and listen to an eBook for a minimum of two hours. Stop by the Miami Lakes Branch Library to pick up an entry form with the official contest rules or visit www.mdpls.org. The Summer Reading Program is made possible with generous support of the Miami Dolphins Foundation and the Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library.

For Children and Families:
Read the Book, Watch the Movie – Share in stories and enjoy the book based film. Title to be shown “Disney’s Descendants.” Event is sponsored by the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 4.

Crazy Eddy’s Juggling and Dance Show: Summer Reading Kickoff – Duck and cover! Crazy Eddy’s fun filled juggling show with lots of audience participation is here. After all, why should he do all the work? Crazy Eddy juggles balls, clubs, bowling balls, rides a unicycle, and spins plates with the help of the audience. Also hula hoops, chicken dancing, limbo and several dance games for all ages. Event is sponsored by the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 11.

On Your Mark, Get Set...Read, Movie Screenings – Beat the heat with family, friendly films. Titles include “Minions,” “Finding Nemo,” and “Lego Justice League.” Events are sponsored by the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 3 p.m. on Saturdays, June 11, 18 and 25.

Healthy Body, Healthy Mind – Free Lunch at the Library – Kids 18 and under can enjoy a free lunch served on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last, provided by Sisters For Abundant Living, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. from June 13 to August 12. On Your Mark, Get Set...Read: Library Olympics – Join a variety of active challenges and book based activities from “Angry Birds” games to Home Depot workshops, for ages 5 and up at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, June 18, 23 and 30.

Gross Bodies – Cough, sneeze, gesundheit! Our bodies do some truly weird (and totally gross) things that are actually important to human survival. Learn how blood coagulates, then make fake scabs to demonstrate their armor-like qualities. Next create fake mucus and roll it in sand to see how it collects debris. Event is best for ages 6 to 12. Presented by the Frost Science Mobile Outreach and sponsored by the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 18.

Lego Library Club – Join with other children ages 5 and up for monthly Lego builds at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 25. 

For Teens:

Get in the Game!: Movie Screening – Teen Club presents “Creed” sponsored by the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7.

Teen Club: Get in the Game, READ! – Teen Club presents Professor George Pearson from FIU as he demonstrates unique and quirky games from Japan, at 5:30 p.m.. on Tuesday, June 14.  

Sushi Roll Workshop – Learn the culinary art of rolling sushi as sushi chef Mitsutoshi Sekita teaches the skills and techniques necessary to create this healthy Japanese dish. Space is limited. For ages 13 and up. Contact the branch for registration information. Event is presented by the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21.

Teen Club - Teens meet to play video games, watch anime, draw or discuss books at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28.

For Adults: 

Strengthening Families and Communities – University of Miami’s Families First program offers a free 12-week group for parents of children ages 1 to 7 years of age. Parents will discuss and learn ways to help children identify and express their feelings, improve children’s behavior, and teach children to handle stress. Registration required by calling 305-243-8425 or email familiesfirst@miami.edu. Sessions scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Fridays, June 3, 10, 17 and 24.

Go Club of Miami Lakes – Now everyone can embark on a journey and uncover the ancient game of strategy, attack and defense, the Game of Go. Meets from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, June 4, 11, 18 and 25.

Commissioner Esteban Bovo’s Mobile Office Community Outreach – This provides an opportunity for the community to speak with the Commissioner and/or his representative from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, June 13.

Book Discussion Group – This month’s title is “I am Malala” by Malala Yousafazai at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21.

Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart Community Outreach – A member of his staff will be on hand to discuss federal issues or any problem a constituent may have with a federal agency at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22.

Exercise Your Mind: Movie Screenings – Entertaining movies that will stretch the mind. This month’s title is “Bridge of Spies” at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 27.

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
