Walter Reyes, CFO for The Keyes Company, participated annually in the Dolphins Cancer Challenge, a cycling event that raises money for the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
As he was preparing for the event in 2013, Reyes tragically died during practice on Key Biscayne, and his associates from Keyes, which has two offices on Main Street in Miami Lakes, wanted to keep his efforts and memory alive.
The associates recently competed in the third annual Keyes Cares Walter Reyes Memorial golf tournament at the Jacaranda Golf Club in Plantation.
About 150 players took part in the event, which helped raise money for the Dolphins Cancer Challenge and UM’s Cancer Center.
The event also included a silent auction for sports memorabilia, gifts, dinner for two at a steak house restaurant, dinner and a reception.
Juan Carlos Fernandez, an associate at Keyes, said his colleagues and peers from the real estate industry demonstrated camaraderie during the event that paid homage to Reyes.
“It was a great event and everybody was happy to be there,” he said.
The Keyes Company, UM’s Cancer Center and Dolphins Cancer Challenge have a Miami Lakes connection.
Keyes has been located on Main Street for more than 16 years, and Michael Mandich, son of former Miami Dolphins tight end Jim Mandich, a long time Miami Lakes resident who died of cancer, is executive director for the Dolphins Cancer Challenge which raises money for UM’s Cancer Center.
