Letter from the Editor

Dear Neighbor,
If you are a regular reader of The Miami Laker, you may know that my predecessor, Roger Reece, died Aug. 4 after a brief illness.
For more than three decades, Roger was the editor and publisher of the The Miami Laker, which he loved.
Even though I’ve had the privilege of leading the newspaper for just a short time, I can say that I feel the same way.
My story begins in New York City, where I worked in banking.
But my family loved newspapers. I had grown up reading the New York Daily News, Life magazine and other publications, and always wanted to become a reporter.
After changing careers, I wrote for The Times Union in Albany, N.Y., for PEOPLE magazine and most recently, for The South Florida Sun Sentinel.
My beats have included municipal governments, celebrities, crime and breaking news. I’ve chased stories in six states and in seven countries.
But this feels different. Miami Lakes is where my husband and I have lived and enjoyed life for 15 years.
It’s a tremendous opportunity to work for The Graham Companies, and to edit and publish our hometown paper.
The Miami Laker is a community newspaper, in the truest sense of that phrase.
Our work begins with our reporters. Megan Medina covers education, the arts and dining scenes and new businesses.
David Snelling writes about municipal government, sports and interesting people around town.
Maya Lopez is our advertising sales representative, and she makes sure businesses are well represented in our pages.
Together, we’re committed to doing our best for you.
With this issue, we’re starting three new, recurring columns:
--Taking Root, which will discuss what to plant in your garden at the start of each season;
--Workout, with exercise tips for our fitness-focused community, and
--Our Neighborhoods, which will profile the town’s more than 40 homeowner associations and communities, one at a time.
There’s more to come. Please let me know what you think, at 305-817-4007 or LindaT@MiamiLaker.com.
See you around town,
Linda
