Area residents joined Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department staff and District 13 Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. for the grand opening of a new playground at the popular “Tom Sawyer’s Play Island” at Amelia Earhart Park, 401 E. 65 Street in Hialeah.
A fort-style tree house with climbers, spinners, slide, balance beams, swings and musical instruments to play are part of the new playground amenities, deigned to keep children ages 2-12 active and engaged in the outdoors.
The fully-accessible playground area is approximately 7,500 square feet, making it the largest playground in the county’s parks system.
Project cost was approximately $500,000 and was funded by the “Building Better Communities” General Obligation Bond Program.
“I am delighted to see the new and improved Tom Sawyer Play Island Playground,” said Bovo. “These new playground facilities were much needed and deserved. I highly encourage residents to bring their children here for regular visits and experience all this beautiful park as to offer.”
