M. Lakes Branch Library announces free January events for all ages

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs are available for the public during January:

For Children and Families:

Reading Ready Toddler Storytime - Stories, songs and activities for toddlers and their care givers at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, January 8, 22 and 29.

Paws to Read – Certified therapy dogs listen to children read aloud which can help with reading skills at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 10.

Hand Play with Activated Storytellers – Hand Play is an entertaining, interactive story time featuring games, songs and stories introducing American Sign Language to babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their caregivers. Event is limited to 25 participants and is made possible by Target and presented by Activated Story Theatre at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 16.

Activated Storytellers presents: Non-stop action, a grown woman squeezing through a tennis racquet, audience participation, music, American Sign Language, quick costume changes and witty comedy that will tickle the funny bone. Entertaining for the stroller set to grandparents and all ages in-between. Program made possible by Target and presented before what is rumored to be the “world’s largest picture book” at 4 p.m. on Friday, January 16.

Reading With Your Child – Families Building Better Readers is a dynamic reading workshop for parents and children in elementary, middle and high school. The purpose of the workshop is to teach parents how to set their children up for successful reading practices at home. Program is sponsored by the Parent Academy of Miami-Dade County Public Schools in partnership with the Miami-Dade Public Library System. Program will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, January 26.

Saturday Matinee at the Library – Miami Lakes Branch will present a family friendly film, “Lego Movie,” at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 3. 

For Teens:

Tween Book Club – A children’s book club for ages 8-12 that meets once a month to discuss the chosen book. This month is “How to Train a Dragon” by Cressida Crowell. Meets at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 31.

Teen Club Movie Night – Teens Geek Movies presents “Kung Fu Hustle” at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 6.

Teen Club - Teens meet to play video games, watch anime, draw or discuss books. For ages 12-18 at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13 and 27.

For Adults: 

Affordable Care Act Assistance – From 3 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, January 6, 13, 20 and 27.

Book Discussion Group – This month’s title is “The Obituary Writer” by Ann Hood. Meets at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20.

Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr.’s Outreach – The Commissioner and/or a member of his staff will be on hand to discuss any questions or issues from Miami-Dade County District 13 constituents from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, January 12.

Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach – A member of Rep. Diaz-Balart’s staff will visit the library to discuss federal issues or any problem a constituent may have with a federal agency from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28. 

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
