Mater Lakes sends 12 wrestlers to state meet

    Ethan Vergara and Azakin Sejour won Florida High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships in Kissimmee to lead a strong showing by the boys and girls teams from Mater Lakes Academy back in March. Ethan won his second state title in the Class 1A 285-pound division.  Azakin won the state crown in the Class 1A 145-pound division. 

     In the girls competition, Sofia Ferran reached the state-title bout and finished second at 110 pounds. Janice Quiroa was fourth in her 140-pound division.

     The boys team finished ninth overall according to the FHSAA, and the girls team -- with only three qualifiers -- still finished 10th.

    The Mater Lakes boys who made the state tournament were Kellen Messina (106-pound division), Anthony O’Dell (113), Ethan Tran (eighth place, 120), Malikai Badillo (126), Dylan Garcia (132), Azakin Sejour, Eric Hodge (160), Damian Soto (fifth place, 220) and Ethan Vergara.
