The Board of Miami-Dade County Public Schools recognized the Civic Engagement Academy at Bob Graham Education Center on Dec. 15.

Calling the academy a “precious asset” to the board’s focus on civic education, it was praised for its outstanding performance. The academy was founded in 2012 by former U.S. Sen. and Fla. Gov. Bob Graham, for whom the school is named.

Students enrolled in the program have excelled at district, state and local competitions.  Those contests included 1st place finishes; the teams have entered Lead2Feed; Project Citizen; Mock Trial and We the People competitions.

Six hundred students have participated in the academy, the board said. It has promoted excellence in civics education, with a goal toward shaping future leaders who are dedicated to serving their communities, according to the board.
