Ryan Hernandez, 17, of Miami Lakes, has won the Florida Youth Soccer Association’s “Save of the Year” award for his stop of a penalty kick.

The goalkeeper dove to his left to stop the ball with 10 minutes remaining in the Florida State Cup final in Auburndale, Fla. back in May.

His play preserved a one-goal lead for his Strikers Miami 2004 Elite club team and helped them go on to win that title.

Ryan was honored at the Florida Youth Soccer Association’s annual meeting in Orlando in August, where he received an engraved trophy.

Ryan is home-schooled. He has lived in town since 1994 and began playing competitive team soccer at age 11, his mother Thais Hernandez said.
