Miami Lakes Branch Library plans June programs

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during June:

For Children and Families: 

Wonder Women Day – Join the library staff for super hero training and crafts, followed by screening of animated Women Woman movie, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 3. 

Summer Reading Kickoff: Building Noise – Miami Children’s Museum presents: Follow an ordinary work day of three construction workers who don’t build walls or towers, but instead build noise. Through body percussion, everyday objects and boom whacks, the builders build rhythm and songs to get through their day. This interactive piece concludes with the audience building one giant sound scape. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 10. 

Library Lego Club – Join for monthly Lego builds at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17.

Movies and Stories for Kids – Enjoy watching some of our favorite movies with your family and friends. Call for visit branch for movie listings. Scheduled at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, June 7, 14 and 21. 

Storytelling with Scratch! – Create and share digital stories and animations. Use the computer to design your own stories. No previous computer experience is necessary. CS First Storytelling Club. Contact the branch to register. For ages 8-12 years old at 4 p.m. on Mondays, June 12, 19 and 26. 

Father’s Day Painting for Toddlers – Create a simple painting in honor of Father’s Day. Little ones will need caregivers guidance. Best for ages 18 months to 3 years at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14.

Balloon Building Workshop – Celebrate this year’s Summer Reading theme, “Build a Better World,” with a fun workshop. Learn how to make three different shapes and join in for balloon hat chaos! Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board  at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 15.  

Miss Latina’s Sewing Extravaganza! – Join Miss Latina as she demonstrates how to make fun printed tote bags for the summer! Space is limited so contact the branch to register. Best for ages 8 and up. Presented by the library’s CEP Department at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 17.

Tween Book Club - Children between ages 8 and 12 meet, read, and discuss books once a month. This month’s selection is “Wonder” by R. J. Palacio. Meets at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 21. 

Minecraft Challenge – Test your gaming skills at the Minecraft Challenge. Use the branch controllers or bring your own. Registration required. Call the branch for more information. Meets at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 22. 

Build a Better World with Magic – Robert Hermens has been entertaining children throughout South Florida for years with dazzling magic and loads of comedy. His routines are guaranteed to make everyone laugh. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 24. 

Build a Better World: Create your Build – Create builds with unconventional materials. Space is limited. Contact branch for registration. Meets at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 29.  

For Teens: 

Teen Club Movie Night – The Teen Club presents “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” For ages 12-18 years old. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6.

Teen Club: Build a Better World, Upcycle Your Clothes – Use assorted materials to bring new life to old clothes. Turn a t-shirt into something new or add some sparkle to old shoes. Ideas limited only by imagination. Presented in part by the Town of Miami Lakes at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13. 

STEAMaker Madness – Experiment and play with the newest gadgets and coolest toys from the new Mobile Makerspace carts, including tech puzzles, coding games, Arduinos, Makey Makeys and more. Meets at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27.  

For Adults: 

Meditation Classes – Join the class for meditation derived from Raja Yoga, a discipline that helps develop inner calm, clear thinking and personal well-being, at 11 a.m. on Fridays, June 2 and 9. Meditation will be on hiatus in the summer and will return in the fall. 

Color Your Cares Away – Get social and try out the newest trend in relaxation and stress relief. All materials provided at 12:30 p.m. on Fridays, June 2 and 9.

Book Discussion Group – Call or visit the information desk for this month’s title. Meets at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20. 

USCIS Information Table – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service staff will provide information, materials and answer general questions about the citizenship process, at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 26. 

Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach Table – A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will be available to discuss federal issues and address any concerns a constituent may have with a federal agency from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28. 

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
