Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs are available for the public during May:

For Children and Families:

Read the Book, Watch the Movie – Share in stories and enjoy the book based films. Films include “Mulan,” “Jungle Book,” and “Max.” Event is sponsored by the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, May 14, 21 and 28.

Star Wars Day Craft – May the Fourth be with you. Celebrate Star Wars Day with unique and fun craft activity at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4.

Star Wars Day Movie Screening - Enjoy a screening of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” with other Star Wars fans at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 7.

Paws to Read – Certified therapy dogs listen to children read aloud which can help with reading skills at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14.

Drums of Noto Hanto: Integrated Music and Literature – An interactive performance of Japanese taiko drumming and famous Japanese legend of the people of Nabune, Japan, on the Noto Hanto coast, who, in 1576, cleverly save their village from invading samuai by frightening the enemy away with masks and fires on the beach and...drums. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board and recommended for ages 5 and up at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 14.

For Teens:

Teen Club - Teens meet to play video games, watch anime, draw or discuss books at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31.

Teen Club Movie Night – Teen Club presents the Bruce Lee classic “Enter the Dragon” in honor of Asian Heritage month. Presented by the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3.

YOUmedia Miami On-the-Go: Introduction to Filmmaking – In this 3-week workshop, teens will learn about cameras, film composition and cutting, scripting, storyboarding, sound design and audio production. Workshop is best for teens ages 13-17 who are new to filmmaking. Contract the branch for registration. Workshop scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, May 10, 17 and 24.  

For Adults: 

Strengthening Families and Communities – University of Miami’s Families First program offers a free 12-week group for parents of children ages 1 to 7 years of age. Parents will discuss and learn ways to help children identify and express their feelings, improve children’s behavior, and teach children to handle stress. Registration required by calling 305-243-8425 or email familiesfirst@miami.edu. Sessions scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Fridays, May 6, 13, 20 and 27.

Go Club of Miami Lakes – Now everyone can embark on a journey and uncover the ancient game of strategy, attack and defense, the Game of Go. Meets from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, May 7, 14, 21 and 28.

Commissioner Esteban Bovo’s Mobile Office Community Outreach – This provides an opportunity for the community to speak with the Commissioner and/or his representative from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, May 9.

USCIS Information Table – United States Citizenship and Immigration Service staff will provide information, materials and answer general questions regarding the citizenship process at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 23.

Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart Community Outreach – A member of his staff will be on hand to discuss federal issues or any problem a constituent may have with a federal agency at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25.  

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
