Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs are available for the public during October:
For Children and Families:
Saturday Matinee at the Library – Miami Lakes Branch presents family friendly films. Movie is “Hotel Transylvania” at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 17.
Read Ready Toddler Storytime – Reading Ready Bilingual Toddler Storytime: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month - Bilingual stories, songs and activities for toddlers and their caregivers. For ages 18 months to 3 years old at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 8.
Paws to Read – Certified therapy dogs listen to children read aloud which can help with reading skills. Session meets at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 10.
Sugar Skulls and Hispanic Stories – Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a special story time for the family performed by the Miami Children’s Museum. Participants will decorate their very own sugar skull to take home. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 10.
For Teens:
Tween Book Club – A children’s book club for ages 8-12 that meets once a month to discuss the chosen book. This month’s title is “Finding Serenity” by Angelica Banks. Meets at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 17.
Teen Club – Teens meet to play video games, watch anime, draw or discuss books at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, October 6 and 27.
Gamer Truck – Enjoy a game truck trailer with four widescreen high-def TV’s covering the walls in front of custom stadium seats with built-in vibration motors synched to the on-screen action with speakers in front and back. Everything is linked, so 16 players can play the same game – or against each other. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13.
Game On! Teen Gaming Competition – Celebration National Gaming Day! Forget the arcade, come to the library and play. Winners will move on to the final rounds at the Main Library on Saturday, November 7, at 1 p.m. Bring personal controllers or use the library’s. Registration with branch required. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13.
For Adults:
Go Club of Miami Lakes – Now everyone can embark on a journey and uncover the ancient game of strategy, attack and defense, the Game of Go. Meets from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, October 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.
Latin Cooking with Raquel Roque – Enjoy some delightful examples of Latin cooking from author Raquel Roque’s cookbook, “Cocina Latina: El savor del mundo latino.” Meets are 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 3.
Book Discussion Group - This month’s title is “The Girl Who Walked Home Alone” by Charlotte Chandler at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20.
Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr.’s Community Outreach – An opportunity for the community to speak with the Commissioner and/or his representative from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28.
Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
