Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during December:
For Children and Families:
STEM Saturdays – Enjoy an interactive lesson and hands-on activities with FIU undergraduate and medical students. This month’s theme is “Extract DNA from a Strawberry!” DNA is the building block of life. Participants can do a cool experiment while they learn about DNA and extract it from a strawberry. Event scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 3.
Toddler Storytime – Stories, songs and activities for toddlers and their caregivers. Space is limited so contact branch to register. Scheduled for Thursdays, December 1 and 8 at 11 a.m.
Paws to Read – A reading program that aims to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of therapy dogs who serve as literacy mentors. Parents may bring a book or choose one from the library’s collection at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 10.
Homeschool Science Class – Learn how to create different science projects. Space is limited. Contact branch to register. Scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 14.
Kids on Canvas – Kids will paint on stretched canvas paper and canvas board with acrylic paint as they learn about the techniques, styles and vocabulary of artists such as Renoir, Mondrian, Pollock, Warhol and others. Space is limited. Contact branch to register. Best for ages 7-12 years at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 17.
For Teens:
Teen Club Movie Night – For ages 12-18 years old and presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6.
Teen Club – Teens meet to play video games, watch anime, draw or discuss books at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, December 13 and 27.
For Adults:
GO Club of Miami Lakes – Now everyone can embark on a journey and uncover the ancient game of strategy, attack and defense, the Game of GO. Meets from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, December 3 and 17.
GO Club Tournament-Miami – Annual GO Club Open Tournament with competitors from clubs across Florida from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. Saturday, December 10.
Book Discussion Group – An adult discussion club. Call the branch for this month’s title. Meets at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20.
Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach Table – A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will be available to discuss federal issues and address any concerns a constituent may have with a federal agency from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 28.
Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
