     The Miami-Dade County Library branch in Miami Lakes is offering classes.  Most events require preregistration and popular courses may fill up early. Sign up in advance to avoid being shut out of classes.

Florida State Attorney’s Office Community Outreach

Wed., Jan. 15, 10 a.m. – Noon. A representative from the Florida State Attorney’s Office Community Outreach Division will be available to address concerns from the community. 

Teen Library Advisory Board 

Wed., Jan. 15, 4 p.m. – 5 p.m.  Earn community service hours while helping to make the library a better place for you and your friends. Plan and present events, provide feedback on books, movies, video games and more. Ages 13 – 19.

Talk Crafty to Me!

Thurs., Jan. 16, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Make crafts with other creatives. Materials provided. Ages 19+.

Tai Chi for Beginners

Fri., Jan. 17, 24, 31, 11 a.m. – Noon, Led by a library staffer, this class of gentle and graceful movements is designed to improve balance, coordination, focus and mental health. Wear loose, comfortable clothing.

Ages 19+.

Homework Help & Tutoring  

Sat., Jan. 18, 25; Feb. 1, 8, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Certified teachers tutor students in reading, math and science for one-hour sessions. For grades K-12. Funded in part by The Children’s Trust. For information contact tutoring@mdpls.org or 305-375-1413. www.mdpls.org/tutor.

Miniature Garden Making  Class is full

Wed., Jan. 22, 4 p.m. – 5 p.m.  Use plants, stones, soil and sand to create a miniature Japanese garden. Presented by the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. Made possible by the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board.  Ages 13 – 18. 

Mosaic Making Workshop

Sat., Jan. 25,  3 p.m. – 4 p.m.  Learn how to make unique glass mosaics using stencils and colored and textured pieces of glass. Ages 19+.

Nutrition and Health Class presented by Feeding South Florida

Tues., Jan. 28, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.  Learn to prepare tasty, nutritious meals and get tips on how to eat healthily while on a budget. Reci-pes and treats provided for the class. Ages 19+

Bridging Generations: Art & Conversation

Wed., Jan. 29, 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.  Guided by a professional artist, elders and kids ages 12+ teens create paintings and connect through conversation.

Caregiver & Me Playgroup

Mon., Feb. 3,  10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  Build bonds with your little one with music, creative movement, arts and crafts and sensory explorations. Presented by Round Robin Playgroup. Ages 0 – 5 years

Chess Free Play: Think, Move, Play

Tues., Feb. 4, 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. Beginner and experienced players welcome to enjoy friendly games of chess. Ages 8+.

Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing for toddlers en dos idiomas  

Tues., Feb. 5, 11 a.m. – Noon. Toddlers and caregivers will hear stories, sing songs and enjoy activities in both English and Spanish.  Ages 18 mos. – 3 years.

Teen Library Advisory Board - An Analog Teen in a Digital World

Wed., Feb. 5, 4 p.m. – 5 p.m.  Own vinyl records but don’t have a turntable? Listen to your collection on headphones with friends and create a record label sticker.  Ages 13 – 19.

Story Quilts Inspired by Faith Ringgold – Celebrate Black History Month

Thurs., Feb. 6, 4 p.m. - 5 p.m.  Before her death last year, artist Faith Ringgold created colorful story quilts inspired by her dreams, memories and the Civil Rights Movement. Create a story quilt design influenced by positive life moments. Ages 5 – 12. 

Florida Licensing on Wheels (FLOW)

Fri. Feb. 7, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Renew, replace or update a driver’s license, get a new ID card, renew a vehicle registration, buy a special license plate and more. Bring a car registration. Ages 18+.
