Fred-Haydn Labonte, 13, of Miami Gardens, is this year’s winner of The Graham Companies’ $1,000 college scholarship.
The annual award is given to a student at Miami Lakes Middle School.
The company will present the scholarship when Fred-Haydn graduates Barbara Goleman Senior High School, which he plans to attend in August.
A survey of teachers at his former middle school chose Fred-Haydn because of his work ethic and academic achievements, Language Arts teacher Monica Mazzorana said.
“He also had the highest cumulative GPA in the school,” Mazzorana said in an email. “Teachers unanimously agreed on the wonderful impact he had on our school and his peers.”
Fred-Haydn was part of the school’s Cambridge Magnet Program, where he was exposed to a rigorous curriculum that included high school courses, the teacher said.
