Miami Lakes Sports Hall of Fame announces new class

Sports Staff Report Friday, September 19, 2025

Don Bailey Jr., Joe Weber, Rivers Demby and Karyna Cid will be inducted into the Miami Lakes Sports Hall of Fame later this year, after their enshrinements were unanimously approved by the town council on Aug. 19.

They will compose the eighth class in the hall’s history.

Bailey and Demby were selected as community builders, Weber as a coach and Cid as an athlete.

Bailey played at Hialeah-Miami Lakes High School under coaches Joe Brodsky and Mike Uspensky, then was a center at the University of Miami for coach Howard Schnellenberger and went on to play two seasons in the NFL.

Uspensky and Schnellenberger were both part of the Miami Lakes hall’s class of 2020.

Bailey is the color analyst for the Miami Hurricanes’ football broadcast team and runs Don Bailey Flooring, founded by his father (who is retired).

Demby was the first president of the Optimist Club of Miami Lakes, and part of a small group that went door-to-door in 1969 seeking support for the club.

He was president for two years, served on the board for six more and was instrumental in forming the structure and management of the club, the youth sports offered and recruiting parents to coach. Now 90, he still lends the club advice when needed.

Weber has won more than 600 games as the baseball coach at Christopher Columbus High School, with two FHSAA state championships in a span of 27 seasons. He has lived in Miami Lakes for over 15 years and has spent several summers working with Optimist Club coaches.

Cid was a third-team All-Dade selection by The Miami Herald after averaging 20 points and 6.8 assists per game as a senior in 2004-05 at Barbara Goleman Senior High School. She went on to play basketball at Warner University in Lake Wales, Fla. and now is a physical education teacher and coach at Hialeah Gardens High School.

Cid previously served as a Sports Hall of Fame committee member.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 13 at Optimist Park.  Committee members are Chair Roman Garcia; Vice Chair Miriam Ochoa; Secretary Jim Hamilton and members David Oliver and Marcos Gutierrez.
