Nine middle school students from Miami Lakes K-8 Center competed on January 25 in the 60th annual South Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Miami Dade College North in the new Science Complex.
The Miami Lakes students entered posterboard projects with different science investigations. Each student won a medal and one student, Ariana Rejas, won a special award.
The winners included Isabella Alonso earning an Excellent medal for her project called “Does Seed Depth Affect the Growth of a Plant?”. Sofia Diaz earned a Honorable Mention medal for her project on how hovercrafts work. Karina Maceo earned an Excellent medal for “The effect of Usage Time on the Heat Generated from Laptop Computers.”
Gabriel Martinez’s project on the effect of plants and water on temperature within a greenhouse earned an Excellent medal. Jorge Nin earned an Excellent medal for the “Hot and Cold Batteries” project.
Valentina Rocha used water that was microwaved to feed plants and that project earned an Excellent medal. Ian Rodriguez’s project “Legos Save Lives” about earthquake safe designs earned an Excellent medal. Chloe Schwinghammer earned a Honorable Mention medal for her project “Glow On” about neon and glow sticks.
Ariana Rejas was selected for a Special Award to compete in the BroadCom Masters Science competition this summer after earning a Superior award for her Hydraulic Hand project.
