The Kiwanis Club of Greater Miami Lakes has recently chartered the Key Club at American Senior High School. The addition of American’s Key Club brings the total of sponsored leadership programs in area high schools to a total of seven. Key Clubs are present at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High, Miami Lakes Educational Center, Mater Lakes Academy, Hialeah Gardens Senior High, Jose Marti MAST Academy, and Barbara Goleman Senior High.
Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. It is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through service to others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, called Key Club members, build themselves as they build their schools and communities.
Key Club has approximately 260,000 members in approximately 5,000 clubs and is represented in 31 countries. Formed in 1939, Florida was the first district in Key Club. A noteworthy former Key Club member is Senator Bob Graham.
This year the Lieutenant Governor elected for Division 25 A (Miami Lakes and Hialeah areas) is Sabrina Cerquera attending Miami Lakes Educational Center High School. Her division currently has 14 clubs in it and she is one of 41 Lieutenant Governors in the Florida District.
Cerquera along with her counterparts statewide just returned from their own district board level training in Haines City conducted by the Florida District of Kiwanis Committee on Key Club. This is where they learned more about their position and refined many skills necessary to discharge the responsibilities of their position.
