The Town of Miami Lakes has completed a multi-use lane for bicyclists and walkers along Northwest 146th Street in the West Lakes neighborhood.

The raised path is between Northwest 87th Avenue and Northwest 89th Avenue and has new striping and signs that describe its purpose.

The project was approved in Nov. 2021 and construction began in Nov. 2024, said Omar Santos, director of Public Works. There were delays caused by the bidding process and construction was completed on April 25.

A grant from the Florida Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives Program – which funds accessible safe routes for non-motorized travel such as bike paths, pedestrian walkways and recreational trails – paid $586,320, the costs for most of the $680,856 project. The town’s portion of the costs was $94,536, the town said.

“The [town’s] Greenways and Trails Master Plan identifies a need for alternative transportation modes…this is one of those locations that was identified because of the proximity to [Barbara Goleman Senior High School] and density in that area,” Santos said.

A goal of the Greenways and Trails Master Plan is to eventually create a connected network throughout Miami Lakes.
