Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s drama club recently performed In the Heights during a three-night performance schedule totaling over 1,300 audience members, breaking records for the most-attended performance.
Part of the astonishing attendance was due to the cast which included a combination of students who live for theatre, and those whose talents stretch beyond various skill sets.
This performance was especially emotional for the director, Cristina Pla-Guzman. “I was completely enamored with In the Heights from the first time I saw it,” she said. “I realized that as a Cuban American, I struggled with what it meant to be both, just like the characters themselves are dealing with."
In the Heights is set in the New York neighborhood, Washington Heights, and explores the struggles of a hopeful community, chasing their dreams of a different life.
“In the end,” said Pla-Guzman, “the characters realize that they are home, and my theatre members have found a home here with each other.”
After four months of rehearsals and over 100 hours of set building, the students formed a bond and that unique family-feel was evident on stage.
“As with any performance, we would not be as successful if it were not for the parents who consistently show their support in various ways, and for that, I am forever grateful,” said Pla-Guzman.
Pla-Guzman is currently working on her next major project, the school's Summer Acting Camp. Students from ages 12-18 are invited to register for a phenomenal week-long workshop acting camp which ends with a live performance for family and friends.
