Pets of Miami Lakes

Bruno, a Jack Russell Terrier mix, is a survivor. Newlyweds Vanessa Salinas-Acosta and Juan

Salinas-Acosta adopted the boy from the county shelter in 2009.

He’s lived with the couple in downtown Miami Lakes since 2022, and his exercise routines may be contributing to his longevity.

Despite his advanced age, Bruno will run up and down three flights of stairs and takes long walks around town, Vanessa Salinas-Acosta said.

The trio’s travels include visits to Graham Park for Bruno to bark at ducks and other dogs at the pond.

But don’t ask Bruno to visit any of the life-sized painted cow statues in the neighborhood. They give him “anxiety” and he “usually runs in the opposite direction when he encounters one,” she said.

Bruno’s favorite place in the world is his balcony couch, where he basks in the sun.

Though he’s a bit nervous to meet new people, if they encourage him to “tumba,” or roll over, he’ll happily comply for some belly rubs.

“He’s a very Cuban dog,” she said. “He speaks Spanish.”
