A new dog park in Miami Lakes needs a name and the town is sponsoring a contest for residents to choose one for the off-leash dog recreation area, which is scheduled to open in 2016.

The dog park will be located at 14048 Palmetto Frontage Road (N.W. 77 Court).

Miami Lakes canines and their owners have been eagerly wagging their tails awaiting the opening of dog park since the town approved the recreation area concept plan in 2013.

For the contest, entries can be e-mailed to Jackie Calzadilla at calzadillaj@miamilakes-fl.gov with “Dog Park Name Contest” as the subject line.

Submissions can be also sent by mail to the Town of Miami Lakes, Attn: Name the Dog Park Contest, 6601 Main Street, Miami Lakes, FL 33014.

The deadline is Wednesday, September 30, at 5 p.m.

The dog recreation area’s name based on the winning entrant’s submission will be revealed at the groundbreaking and naming ceremony at a date to be announced, along with a commemorative plaque, recognizing the winner for their creativity.

All entries will be judged by a group of volunteers picked by the town and the winner will be chosen based on originality and uniqueness. The contest is open to all residents. Submissions are limited to one entry per person.

The proposed dog recreation area will feature both a passive recreational area and two separate fenced areas for smaller and larger dogs.

The area also includes benches, drinking fountains for the dogs and a joint open air shelter for use by pet owners.

In addition, the site incorporates a portion of the proposed 10 foot wide bike trail along the south side of Palmetto Frontage Road.
