During its April 15 regular monthly meeting, the Miami-Dade County School Board approved three recommendations by Chairwoman Perla Tabares Hantman including the commemoration of May 20 as Cuban Independence Day, a resolution proclaiming May 5 as National Teacher Day for public school teachers, and recognizing the 2015 Senior High School Safety Campaign Contest winners.
“Our school district joins thousands of Cuban-Americans in our community and throughout the world in celebrating May 20 as Cuban Independence Day, an important date in that country’s history when it gained its independence from Spain,” said Hantman.
“It is also important that we recognize the significant and valuable role that teachers play in education and in the daily lives of our students, and that we enhance public awareness on the dangers of texting while driving a vehicle.”
The School Board announced and recognized the winners of the 2015 Senior High School Safety Campaign Contest. The winners were Hector Pagan, Elyssa Llanso, Yasiel Gonzlez, Danellis Sandoval, Jose Marrero, Dennis Hernández, Amanda Corral, Christina Holloway, Sky Tayon, Becky Morel and Gabriel Lezama.
