Seventy-two young musicians had a “blast” for 20 days at the 17th annual Summer Music Academy hosted by the South Florida Youth Symphony at Miami Lakes Congregational Church.

Students studied orchestral strings, classical guitar, all winds and percussion instruments, steel pan, piano, and choir, as well as music theory, composition, music history, recorders, and even a double reed making class.

The camp was sponsored in part through grants from Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs Department, the Mayor and County Commissioners, the Children’s Trust, the Miami-Dade County Office of Management and Budget, and Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza of Miami Lakes.

The South Florida Youth Symphony is holding auditions for the school season on Sundays, August 17 and 24. Auditions will be held by appointment by calling 305-238-2729.
