Spanish Lake Elementary's (SLE) faculty salutes the school’s fifth grade science fair winners. First place school winner and district honorable mention winner was Diana Mora.
Mora's project was titled “Solar Power.” The purpose of her project was to see what time of the day was best for a solar powered car to travel the longest distance. She made her own car with solar panels.
District third place winner and second place school winner was Nicholas Marti who discovered how the body's digestive system interacts with certain chemicals. His candy-based project was titled “Sweet Science.”
Third place school winner was Annabella Falero whose project was titled “Acids v.s. Marble.” She discovered how quickly various acids would dissolve pieces of marble.
Through creative, independent exploration, science projects encourage all students to discover science through active learning or inquiry-based, “hands-on” learning. Students learn by doing and not science by the book.
Students learn that science is a process and are able to share a discovery that they are most interested in. SLE science teachers’ main goal is to teach their students how to become researchers. Individual science projects are required for fifth grade students, while the lower grades may do group projects.
