Drivers of electric vehicles in Miami Lakes may use four new public charging stations installed by The Graham Companies at its South Pointe Residences & Shops.
“I think it’s a great idea,” said Councilman Ray Garcia, who has advocated from the council dais for installation of more EV charging stations in town. “The Grahams have always been ahead of their time. They’ve always provided great amenities for not only the residents but their tenants, too.”
Drivers can power an EV vehicle at the stations through the ChargePoint app. Up to four cars at a time can get power from the Level 2 devices.
In early July, the cost was 35 cents per kilowatt. The stations are open 24 hours.
Garcia said the town requires installation of EV stations at new developments. He said the devices encourage customers who may want to charge their cars to shop or use other retail services.
“I’d like to see more charging stations, for example on Main Street,” Garcia said. “Fast charging would be an excellent amenity as well. If you have a Level 3 or 4, it becomes a destination for them.”
He called Miami Lakes and its proximity to major highways “a prime location. We should have at minimum, 30 Level 2 stations throughout the town. ... We’re still behind cities like Hialeah that have more charging stations. But it’s a step in the right direction.”
