We Get Letters: Thanks for Flag Retirement Story

Thank you so much for having the information about the Flag Retirement Ceremony in the February 6 issue. I took some flags over to Town Center and promised myself that I would attend the ceremony on February 28.

I am a Girl Scout Outdoor Trainer and have done many flag retirements over a campfire at a training. I wondered how it could be done at 9 a.m. and it be as meaningful.

I was very impressed; it was well planned out and executed. I was happy that Girl Scouts were there to help.

The gentlemen who spoke on the history and protocol of the flag was great. All who were there participated by placing parts of the flag, stripes or the blue field, on the fire. There were a number of veterans there but, I wished that more people had been there to learn about the flag and its prper disposal.

I understand that it is to be an annual event; hopefully more people will be there next year.
