Miami Lakes officials participated in the January 24 ribbon cutting and office grand opening of the University of Miami/NSU Center for Autism & Related Disabilities (CARD) located at 5801 N.W. 151 Street, Suite 203.

Based out of the University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University, CARD is one of seven state-funded university-based outreach and support centers in Florida dedicated to optimizing the potential of people with autism spectrum disorders, dual sensory impairments, sensory impairments with other disabling conditions, and related disabilities.

“We are very proud to welcome UM/NSU CARD to Miami Lakes and wish them much success as they continue to serve the special needs community in our local area,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton.

Under the direction of Dr. Michael Alessandri, CARD provides essential services to the special needs community. Some of those services include individualized client and family support, family and professional training, public education and awareness, community outreach and programmatic consultation/technical assistance.

Over the years, CARD’s constituency has grown from 88 families in 1993 to over 8,000 families today in Monroe, Miami-Dade and Broward counties. For more information, call 1-800-9-AUTISM, ext. 1
