American clinches 16-7 A district championship

For the third consecutive year, American High’s football team clinched the 16-7A district championship with a win over Mater Academy, 35-0, and Miami Springs finished district runner-up and advances to the post season.

Mater Academy could have created a three-way district tie playoff had it beat American but the Patriots’ offense was too explosive and the defense took apart the offense. Since head coach Corey Bell took over in 2011, American has won three straight district titles and three playoff berths.

In the final regular season game last weekend, American lost to Carol City 28-21.Also in football news, Pace High school missed the playoffs for the third straight season with a loss to Gulliver Prep, 17-10, and Dade Christian’s chances of returning to the state championship game were dashed.

Pace ended the regular season at 6-4 with a 17-12 win over Belen last weekend.Hialeah-Miami Lakes prevented Goleman from winning its third game of the season, as the Trojans rallied in the fourth quarter to win 43-32.

Hialeah Gardens remained winless at 0-9 for the season following a loss to Krop, 35-6, and then endured its 30th consecutive loss last weekend to Goleman, 32-6. Gardens last victory was over Goleman in the final 2010 game.
