Bob Graham Education Center’s 7th Grade Bobcat Law Society won first place at the 2016 Project Citizen Fair at Florida International University’s School of Law.
The group presented the Breanna Vergara EKG Initiative project, named after the 11-year-old Miami Lakes resident who died of a rare heart condition after she collapsed during dance practice in 2014.
Her mother, Claudia Vergara, said her daughter died from pre-excitation Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a congenital heart defect that is curable when it is detected with an EKG.
The Town of Miami Lakes and the Breanna Vergara Foundation are spearheading the initiative to make sure all kids who participate in sports and other physical activities in the town have a free EKG at local hospitals to detect any heart conditions that can save their lives.
The Bobcat Law Society will be among the schools representing Miami-Dade Public Schools at the Project Citizen Capitol Showcase.
