For the second time in Goleman’s history, the school’s badminton team won the Divisional Championship title at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC).

“We had a good season with a great finish,” said coach Debbie Perez.

Three-year Boys Doubles champ, senior, Danny Xie and Anthony Dally went undefeated in five matches to declare victory. Also undefeated was junior, Patricia Miranda in Girls Singles, which is a first in this category for Goleman. Senior Neil Maragy had a good showing in fourth place in Boys Singles. In Girls Doubles, seniors Gabriella Sallai and Ashley Osorio finished in second place with seniors, Kirsten Cabarcas and Megan Lopez in third place.

Also undefeated was Mixed Doubles with seniors, Marcus Tavarez and Claudia Alonso playing hard and in sync to retain their title from last year. With a strong second place win, juniors Gabriel Brok and Chelsea Henriquez look forward to next season.

As most of the team has played together for the past four years, this victory is bittersweet. Despite leaving high school with a winning final season, this is indeed their last season together. The friendships and memories made over the past four years will be long cherished amongst teammates.

“Having these amazing kids to mentor over the past four years has been such an honor and so rewarding. These student-athlete’s are in the top 10 percent of their class and have so many amazing opportunities waiting for them upon graduation. I will miss each and every one of them and wish them success and greatness in their futures,” said Perez.
