Miami Lakes councilmembers joined the young participants in the Just Run Miami Lakes Program on May 27 for a closing ceremony at Picnic Park West.

Just Run Miami Lakes, now in its fifth year, is a free, fun program that promotes fitness, healthy eating, good citizenship, and pride in accomplishment for elementary and middle school students, ages 5 through 14. The free program was made possible through the town’s Youth Activities Task Force and held every Monday and Wednesday over the last four months.

During the ceremony, participants received medals, ran a victory lap and had a healthy snack end-of-the-year party.

As part of this year’s program, Miami Children’s Hospital hosted five sessions, four of which were nutrition workshops and one that featured a set of physical trainers who came to educate participants on the importance of stretching and highlighted warm down techniques.

The 70 participants, together as a group, ran more than 490 miles. Four participants also placed in the “Top Fifteen” in the Cystic Fibrosis 5K Run where 35 youngsters participated and raised move than $300.

The program will be offered again in September. For more information or to register, contact Leisure Services manager Katya Lysak at lysakk@miamilakes-fl.gov, or 305-698-9308.
