Lawton Chiles Middle School lists summer reading choices

Lawton Chiles Middle School is already gearing up for the 2014-2015 school year. Reading lists and activities for rising sixth, seventh and eighth graders have been released for students to continue improving reading comprehension and vocabulary throughout the summer months.

Rising sixth graders are assigned to read:

Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared to Dream by Tonya Lee Stone

Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen

Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George

Rising seventh graders are assigned to read:

Code Orange by Caroline Cooney

Romiette and Julio by Sharon Draper

Tangerine by Edward Bloor

Rising eighth graders are assigned to read:

Double Dutch by Sharon Draper

Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer

Money Hungry by Sharon Flake

Students must read one of the books listed for the grade level they are entering and complete one activity for the book. Activity options include a virtual tour, creating a board game, illustrating events, designing a poster, creating a timeline, creating a test, writing a character diary, creating a letter as a literary agent, or writing and taping an interview with the main character.

The assignment will be collected by language arts teachers on or before Friday, September 19, and is worth three grades. All books listed can be found in stores or online and all are priced under $13.
