The Miami-Dade County School Board unanimously approved two items proposed by Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman at its regular meeting in January. The items endorse March 2014 as both Arts in Our Schools Month and Florida Bike Month.
"Art education has been shown to develop a child's self-esteem and sharpen their critical thinking skills," said Hantman, a long-time supporter of arts education.
“Arts in Our Schools Month not only enhances student's understanding of the world around them, but it also broadens their perspective on traditional academics, and is integral in the development of the whole person,” said Hantman.
“March is Florida Bike Month which promotes healthy lifestyle choices by encouraging physical fitness to help reduce the chances of chronic illnesses and obesity.”
The Board also voted to endorse National Bike-to-School Day on May 7.
