Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs are available for the public during July:
Special Notice to the Public: The Miami Lakes Branch will be closed from July 2 to July 10 and will reopen at noon on July 11.
Summer Reading Program: This year’s program runs from now to August 6. No matter a reader’s age, they are eligible for a chance to win a fabulous prize. All they need to do is read or listen to a book, attend a library program or download and listen to an eBook for a minimum of two hours. Stop by the Miami Lakes Branch Library to pick up an entry form with the official contest rules or visit www.mdpls.org. The Summer Reading Program is made possible with generous support of the Miami Dolphins Foundation and the Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library.
For Children and Families:
On Your Mark, Get Set...Read, Movie Screenings – Beat the heat with family, friendly films. Titles include “Wreck It Ralph” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.) Events are sponsored by the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 3 p.m. on Saturdays, July 16 and 23.
Lego Library Club – Join the Branch for monthly Lego builds. For ages 5 and up at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 23.
Balloon Art Games – Join Jimmy Picos from Balloon Experts as he presents interactive games using balloons. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 28.
Celebrate National Dance Day with Oriental Dancing – Learn the history and cultural significance of this dance as well as how it’s decidedly feminine movements are a sure fire way to have fun. The dance promotes grace, strength, and flexibility while empowering the feminine spirit. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 30.
Musical Theater – Rhythm & Pitch Performing Arts Academy presents “The Jungle Book,” a musical that is student-driven, from the catchy drum beat to the tear-jerking dialogue, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 30.
Reading Circle - A special Reading Circle hosted by Read to Learn Books for Free. Special presenters, including Miami Lakes Town officials, read their favorite children’s stories. Bring new and gently used children’s books to donate to Read to Learn Books for Free, which distributes over 150,000 free books to families in 40 locations throughout Miami-Dade. Event is at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 30.
For Teens:
Teen Club: Get in the Game, READ! - Teens meet to play video games, watch anime, draw or discuss books at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, July 12 and 26.
For Adults:
Strengthening Families and Communities – University of Miami’s Families First program offers a free 12-week group for parents of children ages 1 to 7 years of age. Parents will discuss and learn ways to help children identify and express their feelings, improve children’s behavior, and teach children to handle stress. Registration required by calling 305-243-8425 or email familiesfirst@miami.edu. Sessions scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Fridays, July 1, 15 and 22.
Go Club of Miami Lakes – Now everyone can embark on a journey and uncover the ancient game of strategy, attack and defense, the Game of Go. Meets from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, July 16, 23 and 30.
Book Discussion Group – Meets at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19. Call the Branch for the title.
Exercise our Mind: Movie Screenings – Entertaining movies to stretch your mind at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 18.
USCIS Information Table – United States Citizenship and Immigration Service staff will provide information, materials and answer general questions regarding the citizenship process, at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 25.
Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart Community Outreach – A member of his staff will be on hand to discuss federal issues or any problem a constituent may have with a federal agency at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27.
Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr.’s Mobile Office Community Outreach – An opportunity for the community to speak with the Commissioner and/or his representative, at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 11.
Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
