The Miami Lakes Quilters Club has once again assembled a number of colorful and patriotic quilts just in time for the Fourth of July to honor injured soldiers on their way home. This is the second year the club has made quilts for soldiers on drafty transport planes from Germany to the U.S. The quilts which range from a number of styles and colors give the soldiers a sense of home.

The club, which has convened for over 10 years, sent out their first batch of quilts last Veteran’s Day and shortly after decided to begin 13 quilts in time for Independence Day, a nine month long project. The Miami Lakes Veterans Association works with the Quilters Club by covering the cost of the postage for the packages delivered to Germany.

“We have received letters letting us know how much they liked the quilts,” said Diane Mannion.
The 11 women who made the quilts are Nancy Gross, Diane Mannion, Diane Kurtz, Sally Whitton, Joni Kavanagh, Marilyn Long, Joyce Hauck, Belkis Gutierrez, Katherine Enriquez, Rose Cesaroti and Nancy Barton.
