Mother of Our Redeemer (MOR) Catholic School expanded its sports program by introducing cross country during the school’s orientation meeting in August. When MOR’s Sports Director Joseph Paolercio asked if there was an interest in cross country, there was instant reaction. “This is a great opportunity for all the students because no one gets cut like in most other sports,” said Paolercio.

“The coaches are interested in the athletes improving their times. I couldn’t be more proud of them and the effort they’ve given.” Tryouts attracted 40 highly motivated boys and girls from first through eighth grade, and even a volunteer parent, Ailen Hernandez, who stepped up to coach the teams alongside Paolercio.

“My motivation was to form a team based on my desire for every student to play a sport,” Hernandez said. After many practices, sixth-grader Enrique Bradfield has earned four medals in competitions to date.

His mother Jenny Bradfield said, “This has been a great experience for Enrique. We are very excited about his success and we are very proud of him.” Eighth-grader Juan Najera has also shown improving potential with each race.

Hernandez said, “We have had very surprising results in our first year of competition. As a coach, I am very proud and happy to be there with my Barracudas (the school’s mascot).”
